PRIVATE PILOT LICENCE

YOUR JOURNEY HAS JUST BEGUN

PILOT TRAINING

360 Aviation is a full-time flight training organization, offering you the widest scope of training all under one roof. We offer personal and professional training. Safety is our main concern! Our pledge to all our clients is to provide safe, efficient and cost effective flight training.

360 Aviation is ideally situated at Wonderboom Airport, Pretoria, South Africa. We have a fully functional Air Traffic Control Tower, with a ground frequency so students are exposed to radio work from the start. This creates confidant and polished pilots. The training areas designated to our airport are a mere five-minute flight from take-off at Wonderboom. This means that no time or money is wasted on flying to remote training areas.

If you own a helicopter and would like to do the training on your own machine, we will gladly assist you with that.

Our instructors are also active charter pilots, so they are active and current on what they teach.

Our in-house maintenance facility exposes pilots to the mechanical aspects of aircraft and maintenance, thus enhancing their total understanding of aviation.

360 Aviation is a flight school devoted to producing pilots that are “marketable” in the helicopter industry, and help to place pilots after completion of their training. We have a “train to instruct” package available whereby successful candidates after completion of their training can be employed as flight instructors at 360 Aviation, should there be a space for them at the time. Should we not have space at 360 Aviation, we will once again help to place instructors at another flight school.

17 years of age or older

Have a valid Class II or higher aviation medical certificate

COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENCE

A Commercial Pilot Licence enables you to fly for remuneration, and thus enables you to work for a company doing instruction, game capture, slinging, charter or any other commercial operation, should you meet their specific requirements and have obtained all the necessary ratings.

We offer many tailor made packages for you to build the required hours to obtain a commercial license, thus enabling you to walk away with the expertise you will need for your field of interest. It is not uncommon to be unsure of what sort of helicopter flying you want to end up doing, we will guide you through making this important decision by allowing you to join us on commercial operations wherever possible, and be a part of the ground crew and/or aircrew.

In order to obtain a Commercial Pilot Licence, the applicant would need to meet the following minimum requirements set out by Civil Aviation Authority

18 years of age or older

Must already have a valid South African Private Pilot Licence

Minimum of 200 hours total helicopter flight experience

Must pass all 8 examinations for Commercial Pilot Licence

Have a valid Class 1 aviation medical certificate

NIGHT RATING

A night rating needs to be obtained in order to exercise the privileges of your Licence held at night. This course gives a  idea of basic instrument flying and the dangers of flying with insufficient visual reference to the ground or horizon.

The requirements for a night rating are as follows:

An applicant for a night rating must be the holder of a valid pilot licence.

An applicant for a night rating must have undergone the following training at a CAA approved flight training centre;

5 hours theoretical knowledge briefings.

A minimum of 10 hours instrument training, of which no more than 5 hours may be flown in an approved flight simulator.

At least 5 take-offs and landings at night as the pilot manipulating the controls while under dual instruction.

At least 5 circuits at night while under dual flight instruction.

Pass an online examination.

Pass the practical skills test.

The night rating will stay valid as long as the pilot licence held is valid.

INSTRUCTORS RATING

An intense Instructors course will need to be completed in order to obtain an Instructors Rating. The course will cover everything you need to know in order to become a helicopter pilot instructor upon completion. You could effectively call this a “teach the teacher” course. To obtain your helicopter instructor rating, you would need to successfully complete the following:

20 hours minimum dual flying time   (Referred to as 'Patter')

A minimum of 80 hours briefing/lecture time, where you as   the  student  instructor  will  be  asked  to  present briefings to your instructor

2 online theoretical exams

An oral as well as a practical skills test

The 20 hours 'Patter' may be included in your hour building towards your Commercial Pilot Licence.

You will have actual hands-on experience during your course.

150 hours Pilot In Command of a helicopter

Instrument Rating

'Instrument rating' refers to the qualifications that a pilot must have in order to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). It is a course that requires additional training and instruction beyond what is required for a Private Pilot License (PPL) or Commercial Pilots License (CPL), including rules and procedures specific to instrument flying.

360 Aviation offers Instrument training in our Robinson R22 or Robinson R44 helicopters, well as in our CAA approved flight simulator.

The practical training towards the Instrument Rating includes a minimum of 40 hours instrument flight instruction, of which one may do a maximum of 20 hours on our simulator.

Included in the 40 hour requirement are the 10 hours basic instrument flying done towards your night rating!

TYPE RATING

A common misbelief is that when you have obtained your Helicopter license, you can simply fly any helicopter you wish. This is not the case. A ‘Type Rating’ would need to be held in order to fly a certain helicopter. A type conversion is the process you would therefore need to undertake to add a helicopter rating to your license.

In order to obtain a rating on a certain helicopter, you would need to fly with an instructor in that specific type of helicopter until you are competent to fly the machine and handle all the emergency procedures required of you. This normally takes 4 - 5 hours of flying time.

You would also need to pass a technical examination, based on the specific type of helicopter you wish to get rated on.

Once a rating on a specific helicopter has been obtained, it will stay valid as long as the Pilot Licence held is valid. It is, however, the responsibility of the Pilot In Command to maintain recency and currency on whichever helicopter they intend to fly.

Mountain Flying Course

This course is held in the Drakensberg mountains in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. It is the highest mountain range in Southern Africa, with peaks that rise to 3,482 metres in height... an area of spectacular natural beauty. The mountains themselves span approximately 1,000 kilometres from southwest to northeast and meets Lesotho at its northeastern border. It forms a great training ground for a mountain flying course. Not only is it a great experience, but is extremely beneficial for pilots of all experience levels.
